Houston Rockets Summer League - Game 1
I like the Rockets, so today we're going to look at Houston's Summer League opener against Cleveland. Here's some background on the eight players who saw action Sunday evening in their 84-76 win.
The Starters
Alperen Şengün - Şengün just turned 19 last month, but he's already been named the Turkish League MVP having won the award in 2021. The 6'10" big man was drafted 16th overall in this year's draft. 15 points, 15 rebounds, 4 blocks
Kenyon Martin Jr. - A second round pick in 2020 (52nd overall), the 20 year-old Martin debuted last season with the Rockets averaging 9.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 45 appearances (8 starts). The 6'6" small forward was named to the NBA G League All-Rookie Team in 2021 after averaging 17.5 points and 11.4 rebounds per game. 17 points, 3 rebounds
Jalen Green - 19 year old Green's the big name on the roster this summer after getting drafted second overall in the 2021 NBA Draft. Fun fact, according to Wikipedia we went to high school in the same town! Green opted out of college and instead played with a developmental team associated with the NBA G League last year where he averaged 17.9 points. A 6'6" shooting guard, Green won Gold with the U.S. at the FIBA U-18 World Cup in Greece. 23 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists
Josh Christopher - Christopher, also 19, was selected with the 24th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. The former Arizona State shooting guard was limited to just 15 games with the Sun Devils due to injury, but averaged 14.3 points and 4.7 rebounds. 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists
Khyri Thomas - A 2018 second round pick, the 25 year old Thomas has appeared in parts of 3 NBA seasons splitting time between the Pistons and Rockets. As a member of the Rockets last season, Thomas - a late-season signing - appeared in just five games, but scored in double digits in four of them finishing with averages of 16.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists. 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists
The Reserves
Matthew Hurt - The 6'9" Hurt averaged 18.3 points a game for the Duke Blue Devils last season, but after declaring for the draft, he went undrafted. He is not currently on the Rockets NBA roster. 3 rebounds
Anthony Lamb - The G League's Most Improved Player last season, Lamb was not drafted after four years playing at Vermont. Lamb made his NBA debut in March for the Rockets averaging 5.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in 24 games. 2 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists
Marcus Foster - No stranger to the NBA summer league having played in 2018 with Sacramento and then in 2019 with Orlando, Foster has spent his whole professional career to this point overseas with stints in Korea, Lebanon, Israel, Greece, and most recently Turkey. He is not currently on the Rockets NBA roster. 4 points, 3 rebounds
